Wise Man or Wise Guy?

Rio Vista DrawbridgeQuoting from the General Epistle of James:
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of , who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭5-8‬ NKJV)
I know a lot of people who are long on sarcasm, but short on compassion. These “wise guys” as I call them lack understanding regarding other people. Not everyone acts decently and wisely all the time. This does not qualify them for ridicule, but rather more kind treatment. In this way, they will learn from their misdeeds.
Because wise guys do not show understanding to others, they do not learn the true source of wisdom and understanding. Those who seek wisdom from God will receive understanding and thus treat others with compassion…Golden-Rule style. God’s way is better than the practice of ridicule!
Determine which way you will live, and you will reap benefits from God accordingly.

Prayer: God, help me to be more Christ-like…a wise man, not a wise guy!

Doing Good, the Master’s Way

In the third chapter of the Gospel according to Mark, we find an interesting discourse regarding the practice of doing good.

Then he went back in the meeting place where he found a man with a crippled hand. The Pharisees had their eyes on Jesus to see if he would heal him, hoping to catch him in a Sabbath infraction. He said to the man with the crippled hand, “Stand here where we can see you.”

Then he spoke to the people: “What kind of action suits the Sabbath best? Doing good or doing evil? Helping people or leaving them helpless?” No one said a word. He looked them in the eye, one after another, angry now, furious at their hard-nosed religion. He said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” He held it out—it was as good as new! The Pharisees got out as fast as they could, sputtering about how they would join forces with Herod’s followers and ruin him. (‭Mark‬ ‭3‬:‭1-6‬ MSG)

We fall into rules and regulations that are man-made, not God- made. Staying close to Jesus and His word helps us avoid this hypocrisy! Remember Romans eight? There is no condemnation to those who walk, not according to the flesh (man made rules, self righteous actions, etc.), but walk according to the Spirit, (following Christ’s example of bearing the burdens of others).

Prayer: Jesus, help me to keep the goal in view…Caring for others in the fashion that You care for us.

Prayer of the Day – 10-12-2014

Deitrich Bonhoffer used to say that the Psalms were the prayerbook of the Bible.  In Psalm 150, we see the Spirit of prayerful praise, uttered with every word.

Try repeating this passage back to God several times today and see if it doesn’t lift you up…

stories of faith

1Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.#

Praise ye…: Heb. Hallelujah
2Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
3Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.#

trumpet: or, cornet
4Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.#

dance: or, pipe
5Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
6Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

Psalm 13 Captures My Attitude

Long enough, GOD — you’ve ignored me long enough. I’ve looked at the back of your head long enough. Long enough I’ve carried this ton of trouble, lived with a stomach full of pain. Long enough my arrogant enemies have looked down their noses at me.

Take a good look at me, GOD, my God; I want to look life in the eye, So no enemy can get the best of me or laugh when I fall on my face.

I’ve thrown myself headlong into your arms— I’m celebrating your rescue. I’m singing at the top of my lungs, I’m so full of answered prayers. (‭Psalm‬ ‭13‬:‭1-6‬ MSG)

I find myself feeling the way the Psalmist does in this passage on occasion. It is NOT appropriate for me to feel sorry for myself and to exhibit these negative thoughts. God has blessed me beyond anything I deserve! I have found that He is absolutely faithful…sometimes, even when I am not!

Prayer: LORD…Help me to keep my attitude
Right. Thank you for loving me and intervening in my life. I love you for that!

The Highest Law…by Billy Graham

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: – II Timothy 3:16

The Highest Law

The men who framed our Constitution knew they were writing the basic document for a government of free men; they recognized that men could live as free and independent beings only if each one knew and understood the law. They were to know their rights, their privileges, and their limitations. They were to stand as equals before the court of law, and few judges could be unfair; for the judge, too, was bound by the same law and required to try each case accordingly. . . . As the Constitution is the highest law of the land, so the Bible is the highest law of God. For it is in the Bible that God sets forth His spiritual laws. It is in the Bible that God makes His enduring promises. It is in the Bible that God reveals the plan of redemption for the human race.

Almighty God, each day our nation and we, the people, face so many crises. May each one of us seek wisdom through Your Word, the Bible.

Major Themes XXXIII – GOD’S NAME

PHILLIPIANS 2:1-30 NKJV
(Editor’s note: In review of this topic, it would appear that this installment was skipped, so I interject it here.)
Therefore if there  is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be  done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and  coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the  point  of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain. Yes, and if I am being poured out as  a  drink  offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me. But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel. Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it goes with me. But I trust in the Lord that I myself shall also come shortly. Yet I considered it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier, but your messenger and the one who ministered to my need; since he was longing for you all, and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. For indeed he was sick almost unto death; but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. Therefore I sent him the more eagerly, that when you see him again you may rejoice, and I may be less sorrowful. Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem; because for the work of Christ he came close to death, not regarding his life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.

Know the Bible (by Billy Graham)

ISAIAH 34:16 NKJV – “Search from the book of the Lord , and read: Not one of these shall fail; Not one shall lack her mate. For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.

Know the Bible!

A knowledge of the Bible is essential to a rich and meaningful life. For the words of this Book have a way of filling in the missing pieces, of bridging the gaps, of turning the tarnished colors of our life to jewel-like brilliance. Learn to take your every problem to the Bible. Within its pages you will find the correct answer. But most of all, the Bible is a revelation of the nature of God. The philosophers of the centuries have struggled with the problem of a Supreme Being. Who is He? What is He? Where is He? If there is such a Person, is He interested in me? If so, how can I know Him? These and a thousand other questions about God are answered in this Holy Book we call the Bible.

Daily Prayer

How glorious it is to read Your Word and learn more of You, my Savior and my Lord!

Why Read the Bible XXII

ACTS 8:27-31 NKJV – So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go near and overtake this chariot.” So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him.

Explaining the Word

What is your impression of Philip?

Why is it important to have someone else to talk with about the Bible?

Do you have a person in your life that is this to you?
