Jesus’ Incarnation

As we continue our Advent sermon series, we looked today at Philippians 2.1-11 and the incarnation (if you’ll excuse the vernacular–the incarnation is: God in a bod). We noted that the fullness of Deity and humanity are in Jesus, so He did not get rid of any Godness to be human. Rather, His making Himself nothing refers to the humility of entering our humanness. [Think about it; it is quite a change from eternal glory to a baby who needs his diapers changed.]

Scripture beautifully tells us how Jesus handled the tension between being God and not using His Godness for an advantage: He submitted to the Father in a shepherding relationship. The Father was the Gracious Initiator and Jesus was the Faithful Responder*. Consider the following verses:
